And the winner is...

Ask someone to list the names of top performing 4X4 manufacturers, and SsangYong might not be the first brand to roll off the tongue, but that looks set to change as one of its new models has been named 4X4 of the year.

The fourth generation of the SsangYong Rexton took the overall title in the annual awards from 4X4 Magazine, seeing off tough competition from the likes of Mercedes, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Vauxhall and Skoda.

The Korean manufacturer has been making four-wheel drive vehicles since the 1950s, but it is only in the last couple of years that the company has started to become more noticeable in the UK market, and it is the all new Rexton that has really propelled them into the limelight.

Leisure World Motors, based at Catterick, specialise in SsangYong vehicles and owner Matthew Kinsell is not at all surprised to see the Rexton take the title. “The combination of driving performance, towing capability and stunning interior comfort make this a fantastic all-round car. When you then factor in the price bracket, the Rexton is frankly an unbeatable package,” he said.

“Many of our customers have active outdoor lifestyles, whether they are farmers, compete in equestrian events or enjoy touring caravan holidays. What they are all looking for is a reliable, high-performing vehicle that enables them to make the most of their lifestyle every day. They have found that the Rexton meets all their needs and it has very quickly become a firm favourite.”

Seating up to seven passengers in comfort and with a 2.2l engine, it can tow up to 3.5 tonnes. Power and performance blends with impressive levels of style and comfort. Heated leather seats in the first two rows, touch screen sat nav and Bluetooth connectivity are all available. And if all that wasn’t enough, there are rumours in the industry that SsangYong will be working with renowned Italian designers Pininfarina on the next generation of their cars.

As well as the overall title, it also secured wins in the Off-Roader and Best Value categories of the competition, and with a starting price of £27,500 for the entry level EX model the Rexton represents outstanding value for money.

Editor of 4x4 Magazine, Alan Kidd, said of the Rexton’s win, “Competition for the overall title this year was fiercer than ever, with strong contention from the Land Rover Discovery, Vauxhall Insignia Country Tourer and Skoda Kodiaq. It speaks volumes for how well the Rexton did to beat them, and it is clearly something very special indeed.”
